Riding a horse can be a fun summer activity. If you have yet to do this activity, there are a few steps to follow to keep you and the animal you will ride safe. Here is how to prepare yourself before you leave for the stables.
Get the Right Gear
Purchase a helmet and discount riding boots to protect yourself while you are riding. Check with the instructor you have chosen to work with to see if they have gear for you to use or if you should buy your own. You will also want to wear pants during your first trip out. These will keep your legs safe. If this is your horse, it will need a saddle, girth, bit, reins and bridle for you to use as well.
Prepare To Ride
When the instructor directs you to the horse, take a moment to allow the animal to get familiar to you. Approach it slowly and be quiet when you are near. Lay your hand on it when you are beside it and leave it there so it knows where you are and stays calm. Talk with your teacher to see if you will need to tack your horse or if it will be ready when you get there. They will walk you through if the responsibility is yours.
Begin Your Ride
To start riding, lace your left foot through the left stirrup. Using the saddle or whatever you can reach, pull yourself up on the horse and swing your free leg over the animal. If you have trouble, the instructor can give you a boost. Secure your other foot in the opposite stirrup and take hold of the reins. From here, you will be guided through postures and different fairs until you feel comfortable with what you are doing.
