Pass The Hat

Among the items that I bought yesterday at the Black Friday sale are baby hats and knit baby hats for my niece – for me, they are the best choice of items to give as gifts to my little sweet niece.

For John and Lucy, having Sam after 5 years of marriage was a real blessing. The first time parents couldn’t simply take their eyes away from their little one. They marveled at their bundle of love and joy. As with normal newborns, her head is relatively small. She has a cute nose very much like her mom’s.

For a first time aunt like me, I fussed at what to give Sam, a welcome-to-the-family token. She already has many baby clothes her proud parents purchased. After some deliberation, I decided on baby hats. A hat will provide her head protection from the cold December temperature. At the same time, when fully wrapped up, a hat will all be visible on the baby. I took my time on a store specializing on baby items. I was amazed at the variety of hats sold. They come in a wide range of texture, color, size and shape. Baby hats before were of different make. Ah, how time swiftly passed.

I bought more than a dozen hats. There are small ones, medium, and big ones. Each one is different from the other. She has a hat for different occasions. Her hats will take care of her head gear needs until she’s maybe 3 or 4 years old. I particularly liked the pink knit baby hat with a small yellow butterfly. I have always been fascinated by butterflies. I also liked a cottony brimmed hat that could be tied under the chin.

I went out of the department store with 2 large paper bags of aunt’s best choice for the cutest niece in the world.

The Colder, The Better

My bestfriend’s grandfather, aged 76 was diagnosed of Parkinson’s disease. It started with a tremor in his right hand. Two years back, the disease bacame full-blown. He was almost immobile as if frozen in time. He just stared unblinking, mouth slightly open, with saliva drooling from the corners. His tremors became severe.

His physician prescribed a medication but it made grandpa (as what I call him too) nauseated. At times, he was vomiting. Another medication was prescribed to supplement the first one. For a while, grandpa was fine. But after six months, we noticed fluid retention in his lower limbs. Another medication was given. Still another thing resulted. He was heavily sweating and was in delirium.

I remember that there was a time when they rushed him to the hospital. The doctor told them that his (the doctor’s) only option now was to perform cryosurgery. The procedure entails selective destruction of tissues in a part of his brain. The tissue is to be destroyed by freezing it with a small cryogenic probe. The doctor assured them that all cryogenic equipment used in the hospital are of the highest quality as they are purchased from the world’s number one recognized company.

My bestfriend’s grandfather is now well and enjoying the rest of his twilight years with them. Indeed, life could actually be dependent on a matter of degree.
