Have you heard of the Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss World beauty pageants? I used to follow them closely I was still a teenager but I totally lost track of what’s happening in the beauty contest scene after I started working and got busy building my own career.
Last weekend, I got the chance to watch the Miss World beauty pageant. I was visiting a friend who was watching the telecast of the grand finals of the pageant which was held at the Ordos Stadium Arena in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China on August 18, 2012 (but it was aired on E! at 8 o’clock in the morning last Sunday) and I got hooked into watching it as well especially after watching the spectacular choreographed opening. One hundred sixteen gorgeous and alluring contestants from all over the world represented their respective countries.
After one month of various activities (the contestants started arriving in July 18) for the Miss World event, Wenxia Yu of China bagged the Miss World title. She was crowned by last year’s Miss World Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela. The runners up were Miss Wales Sophie Moulds (first runner up) and Miss Australia Jessica Kahawaty (second runner up). It was Miss Wales who won the Miss Beach Fashion 2012, which is actually the Pageant swimsuit competition for the event but it was Miss China who won the Miss World Talent 2012.
Whenever a contestant from the host country wins the title, controversy always follows. The Miss World 2012 was no different as well because many observers noted that in the entire history of the Miss World event, China only won twice (2012 and 2007) and in both cases, they were the host country. Prior to the grand finals, it was said that Miss Mexico and Miss Philippines had been the favorites to win the title. Both were just top fifteen semifinalists.
