I have a friend who’ll be entering the second trimester of her pregnancy next week. It’s her first pregnancy and like every mother-to-be, she’s excited as can be.
There’s one thing that worries me though (and I think Claire, my friend, is worried about it too), my preggy friend can’t stop smoking. It’s a habit she’s learned since she was in her teens and she’s finding it hard to kick that habit. I guess the temptation (or her addiction) to smoking is so strong – stronger than her motherly instinct of protecting her unborn child.
We all know that cigarette smoking is dangerous to one’s health. The government has been warning us about that since I don’t know when (but it’s amazing why they can’t ban that product – alright, that’s entirely a different story!). It’s even more dangerous for pregnant women to smoke – because it would hurt her unborn child and even cause birth defects and problems).
I wonder if an electronic cigarette would be a better alternative to smoking for those pregnant women? Some brands claim that their product produces no tar, no tobacco, no ash, no smell – but it still has nicotine (some have varying nicotine levels).
Can you suggest what Claire needs to do in order to have a safe pregnancy?
